According to the latest data from the Nepal Demographic and Health Survey, about 32% of adolescents are stunted. Undernutrition in children is a major cause of morbidity and mortality that hinders their long-term physical and mental development.

A hungry child cannot concentrate during lessons and drops out of school, unable to cope. The school is therefore not only a place of learning, but also plays an important role in the health and nutrition of children.

School feeding programmes have been recognised as an effective intervention to address both education and nutritional outcomes of school-aged children in developing countries. This is how the CIAO KIDS Foundation’s midday meal programme came into being. Today, more than 800 primary school children eat a daily hot meal.

Our goal is to provide a hot, high-protein meal that improves the children’s attention span, allowing them to follow their lessons and continue their schooling.
