28 Jul Poetry & Movement: Restoring Confidence in Visually Impaired Children Through the Body and Words
From June 27 to 29, 2025, at the Amar Jyoti Society (Jharkhand, India), a unique workshop brought together 17 visually impaired children from underprivileged backgrounds to explore poetry, body movement, vocal and musical expression. Organized by CIAO KIDS, this initiative aims to rebuild self-esteem and the joy of being.
Why this workshop?
Many of the children were withdrawn, with rigid bodies and silent voices. Marginalization, disability, and poverty had cut them off from their ability to express themselves. This workshop created a safe, supportive space to unlock their bodies and their voices.
Objectives
-
Break through inhibitions linked to disability
-
Explore movement and voice
-
Play with words and rhythm
-
Rediscover the joy of self-expression
-
Make poetry come alive and embodied
-
Foster confidence, cooperation, and joy
In practice: 3 days of liberation
Day 1: Body awareness, first movements inspired by poems, shyness fades away.
Day 2: Choreographed poetry, emotions expressed through movement, music integrated.
Day 3: Collective creation of poems, joyful rehearsals, pushing personal boundaries.
“I didn’t know moving could feel so good.”
“I had never liked poetry until today.”
And the younger ones?
Children aged 4 to 12 explored Indian jingles—combining rhythm, singing, and intergenerational support. In just 3 days, six jingles were learned and shared with great enthusiasm.
What’s next?
Teenagers will continue practicing choreographies for performances, including one on August 15. The younger children will expand their repertoire to create a musical show featuring 15 jingles.
Why does this matter?
Because these children have the right to exist freely, express their inner beauty, and feel proud of themselves.
