10 Jun The Impact of Extreme Heat in India
This summer, India is experiencing one of the hottest seasons on record. The cooling winds, the Norwesters, are not blowing. In some states, only a shower or two has brought some relief to farmers. These extreme conditions are disrupting daily life: farmers are seeing their calendars disrupted, schools are changing their schedules, and those who work outdoors are suffering a loss of income. At our center for visually impaired children in Ranchi district, 66 children are experiencing the intense heat. By the end of April, temperatures were above 40°C, forcing the authorities to bring forward the summer holidays and postpone exams. Half of the children have returned to their villages, but about 30 have stayed behind because their parents are working. The center staff cares for these children and organizes activities to keep them occupied and make their vacations enjoyable. Thanks to the mango and lychee orchards on campus, one of the activities is to make sherbet (Aam Panna), the traditional Indian refreshing drink, prepared from roasted raw mangoes, which are then mixed with water, sugar, salt, and spices such as roasted cumin. It is a moment of sharing, complicity and pleasure that the children experience together and which allows them to forget the difficult circumstances.
